Pole Dancing The Night Away

IMG_2864

This is Alyx. Alyx and I first met when we were five, at a mutual friends birthday party. I mostly remember it because we got to share a tin of biscuits. We didn’t become proper friends until we were about ten or eleven and although for the majority of our friendship we’ve lived oceans apart she’s always been there. I could go on and on about how awesome and amazing she is and how she’s one of the best friends I’ve ever had but I’ll save that for another day.

Alyx has been doing Pole dancing for a couple of years now on and off and since moving to Christchurch (we finally are in the same city) she’s taken it up again. A few months back she said she was competing in The NZAPP competition and would I do her make up. I happily obliged.

After months of hard work and dedication the big day finally arrived. I got Chris to take pictures so that I could talk you all through what we did. Alyx had sent me a few inspiration photo’s and knew she wanted to create a bronze smokey eye and incorporate crystals, the latter a medium I’ve never dabbled in. She also asked me to do her hair too. The hair part we sort of winged, Alyx wanted a hairstyle with curls and something that was pinned back out of her face.

I was really happy with how the end product turned out, especially the hair as it ended up being super easy. But mostly Alyx was happy with what I’d created and she did amazing, I was so proud of her and how far she’d come! Well done Babe!

So, go get yourself a cuppa, and a comfy seat while I try and explain what I did;

face

The Base

For Alyx’s base, I prepped the skin with Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer here. Her skin is on the dry side, so this primer is perfect for laying down an even base and keeping the skin hydrated. I then decided to use the L’oreal true match, as it’s a foundation that can be built up to a full coverage and one that I know lasts all night. Although naturally Alyx is fairer than I, she had, had a spray tan which meant that my shade in W4 Golden Natural suited perfectly. I went in with one light layer, using the Real Techniques Buffing brush. I then decided that as Alyx was going to be on stage, under bright lights, to go in with another layer, with the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush, mainly focusing on areas that needed a little more coverage.  Alyx has pretty flawless skin as it is so I didn’t need to use much concealer at all, just a little under the eyes. I then powdered with the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder, just to lock it all in place.

eyes

The Eyeshadow and The Eyeliner

As I mentioned earlier, Alyx had already said that she wanted a Bronze smokey eye. We decided together, to keep the eye as light and natural looking as you possibly can with a smokey eye. First I put down the Urban Decay Eyeshadow primer as a base for the eyeshadow to stick to, to ensure it would last all night. I then went over this with a translucent powder. For the shadow; I placed the shade ‘Half Baked’ from Urban Decays Naked Palette, which is a true gold shade, all over the lid. I then defined the crease with a mixture of ‘Hustle’ and ‘Darkhorse’ from the same palette which created a shimmery dark brown shade, using a MAC 219 pencil brush to carve out a ‘V’ shape in the outer corner and up into the crease. Once I’d got the opacity that I wanted, I went in with a clean MAC 217 fluffy blending brush (my all time essential brush if you want to create a smokey eye) and blended everything out. Once I’d blended to my hearts content, I then went back in with more of the Half Baked shade. At this point I felt that the gold wasn’t at the intensity that I wanted, so I went in with a Barry M Dazzle Dust in Tan and a slightly damp flat eyeshadow brush (I used a make up wipe to dampen the brush). I patted this on the centre of the eye to add more dimension. I then added a brow bone highlight, using an pearly opal shade from a Victoria Secrets Nakeds palette. I also placed this shade on the inner corner of the eye to brighten it up.

Then came eyeliner. For this look we were using really heavy Ardell Lashes, I therefore decided to add a black winged eyeliner, so that the band of the lashes blended in. I used the E.L.F Black Liquid Eyeliner to create a feline flick on both eyes. I tried to follow the natural flick of Alyx’s lashes and keep the line as  thin as possible.

eyelashes

The Lashes

To ensure the band of the lashes blended in seamlessly, I went over the liquid eyeliner with a black matte shadow, and an angled eyeliner brush, blending upwards towards the gold. Alyx had gone out and picked up these dramatic Ardell no.403 Lashes and thankfully they did fit her eye perfectly, so there was no need to adjust them. Using Ardell eyelash glue, I placed a blob on the back of my hand in order for it to get tacky, this usually takes anywhere from 30-40 seconds. Whilst I’m waiting for the glue, I bend the lashes around my eyeshadow brush, this helps to shape them, making application easier. I then use the end of the eyeshadow brush to apply the glue to the lashes. When I’m applying lashes on someone else I get them to close their eyes completely and using tweezers I place the lashes on to the eye, securing from the middle and then on both outer corners. When they open their eye, gently pull down under the eye to release any glue that may be stuck. I’d asked Alyx to apply a coat of mascara before we did the lashes, just so that she had the possibility of wearing them again. Placing Mascara on top of your falsies, does help with blending them together, but it also makes it much harder to reuse them.

gems

The Sparkles

This was definitely the most time consuming part of the look, and if I had my time to do it again, I would’ve allowed another 45 minutes for this part alone. Alyx purchased different sized gems from here including these really cool teardrop style ones. I used a few pictures as a reference, but to be completely honest, I pretty much went with it. We knew we wanted to place some on the outer part of her face and Alyx also thought it would be a great idea to have the teardrop ones, cascading from one eye, to look like actual tears. The application was very, very fiddly and I used a mixture of tweezers and the top of a make up brush to lay them down. The other part I found hard was making both sides symmetrical, especially under time constraints. To adhere them to her face I used eyelash glue, which worked a charm, with the loss of only one gem on the night.

To finish the face off I added a little white eyeliner to the lower waterline of the eye, to really open them up and brighten. I then added a little Benefit hoola bronzer to contour her face and then added a peachy blush to the apples of her cheek, just for a flush of colour.

lips

The Lips

As this was for a performance, we went all out with the lips too. Alyx had an idea of the colours she wanted to use on her lips, so I went with a Chi Chi lip liner  in bright orange shade. I decided it was a little too much on the orange side, so then went in with a true red colour from MAC called ‘Ruby Woo‘ to create more of a vintage red look. I then layered a deep red gloss, just to give a little shine.

hair

The Hair

I won’t spend too long explaining how I created this look, because quite frankly it was pretty basic. I used my Curl Secret hair tool (It’s that outer space looking contraption that sucks the hair up into it and curls with steam)  to create ringlets. I did this prior to doing Alyx’s make up, as I wanted them to drop a little. Alyx naturally has curly hair, so luckily for us her hair holds a curl really well. If you’re using a standard curling wand, I would recommend curling pieces in opposite directions i.e; One section towards your face, the next away from your face. This just helps the curl to sit more naturally. Once I’d curled the whole head, I sprayed all over with hair spray and then let it sit. Once I’d finished with the make up, I came back to the curls. Using a Tangle Teezer to gently brush through the curls, to loosen them up.  I also went in with a root boosting, and texturising spray, to create some definition. The front was really simple, Alyx already had a side parting in place  so working with this, I grabbed about a 2 and 1/2 inch section from the front of the hair and looped it around and pushed it forward to create a mini victory roll, with the same on the other side. Once they were secure with bobby pins, I sprayed the heck out of it with hairspray and a little shine spray and that was that. See easy!

Well, here we are at the very end. I hope this made sense. I just wanted to say a huge thanks to Alyx for letting me share this with the internet world and trusting me with her face on her big day. Also have to say a massive thank you to Chris for sitting there for the 3 hrs it took, patiently taking photo’s for me, You did an awesome job babe. Anyway I’ve added a few extra pictures below for you to take a little look at. Also if you’re in the Christchurch area and interested in getting into Pole, Alyx goes to Altitude Pole (No stalkers please hehe) they not only do pole, but also Anti Gravity Yoga, Contortion, Aerial Hoop and Aerial Skills, go check them out!

Monthly Beauty Favourites

Monthly Beauty Favourites; July 2014

It’s nearing the end of the month so I thought it would be the perfect time to put together all the items I’ve been loving in the past month. This is something I used to do when I made YouTube videos, so thought it would be nice to do a blog version. There have been a few products that I’ve been loving, not only this month but for a little while now and it would not be fair of me to keep them all to myself.

So I’ll jump right into it.

IMG_2895

Jo Malone ‘Peony & Blush Suede’ Cologne RRP £81.00

I’m going to start with perfume, because this is my absolute favourite of the whole entire month. I feel as if Jo Malone took everything I love and I’d ever dreamt of in a perfume and blended it together and come up with this fragrance ‘Peony Blush Suede’. If you couldn’t already tell, I love this stuff. Mum recently got a sample of this with some products Dad got her and she said it was a little too sweet for her and I guess it is on the sweeter side. It’s a definite floral fragrance, but with sophistication. If you loved Fragrances like, Paul Smith ‘Rose’ or Vera Wang ‘Princess’, then I’m fairly certain you’ll like this one. I’m not great a describing fragrances so I’ll let Jo do the describing; ‘The essence of charm.  Peonies in voluptuous bloom, exquisitely fragile.  Flirtatious with the juicy bite of red apple and the opulence of jasmine, rose and gillyflower.  Mingling with the sensuality of soft, blush suede.  Luxurious and seductive’. So if that doesn’t make you want to try it I don’t know what will. I got mine from the Jo Malone department of John Lewis in the UK here. But it is available in NZ if you are in the Auckland area here. It is rather on the pricey side but definitely worth the splash out.

Charles Worthington Volume and Bounce Texturising Spray RRP £4.99

Next up I thought I would mention this little haircare beauty product. One that I’m going to be super, super sad to let go of (Thankfully my kind and generous father bought me a few back ups). It’s the Charles Worthington Volume and Bounce Texturising Spray. I once again purchased this at Boots in the UK. It is one product that is quite difficult to get in NZ, but keep and eye on this blog if you’re interested as I’m currently testing out a few products available in NZ as substitutes. Back to the product, I first heard of this stuff from AmeliaLiana blog and youtube. She said it was very comparable to the Oribe Dry Texture Spray, that everyone was going crazy for in the beauty world. I have been unable to get my little monkey hands on this product, mostly because its just so darn expensive, so I can’t really say if the CW, that I’m loving is a dupe. But what I can say is this stuff is awesome. It really is like backcombing in a bottle, without the hassle the  next day of getting it out. It gives you both height and volume but also gives your hair some texture and separation. I love using this with my Remmington Big Hair Styler, which gives me that big 1960’s era hair that I love.

The Body Shop Body Butter in Japanese Cherry Blossom

In my humble opinion The Body Shop do one of, if not the best body butters EVER. Now I know that’s a very big statement to make, but trust me I’ve tried many a body butter in my time and every time I find myself wandering back into my local Body Shop to try out another Fragrance. The one I’ve been loving all month and pretty much since Mum and Dad got it for me for my birthday is this, Japanese Cherry Blossom. This smell might not be for everyone as it is once again very floral but for me it’s just perfect. It was wonderful to layer under my Jo Malone Fragrance, to give it that extra floral boost. The texture is creamy and thick enough to make me feel like it’s really working but it doesn’t leave your skin felling all greasy or sticky. Pop into your local Body Shop and give this one a wiff its divine. I’ve sadly just finished mine, so I’m going to have to make another visit. But Body shop if you ever stumble across this post, pretty please make Vineyard Peach a product in the permanent line, so I don’t have to have a panic attack every time you bring it back.

Bondi Sands Tanning Lotion ‘DARK’ RRP $21.06 NZD

Having naturally olive skin and dark hair, in the winter months I tend to turn a pale shade of yellow and the darkness of my hair washes out my complexion, therefore I’m a sucker for fake tan. This is the greatest fake tan I’ve ever used and I believe this is my 4th or maybe 5th bottle of the stuff. It’s dark enough that it actually shows up on my skin. It also has a great guide colour so you can see exactly where you’ve applied the product. Not once have I had a streaky arm or an ompa lumpa, orange moment with this one. But the big winner for this one is that, it has a tropical coconut scent, which if you close your eyes for a wee moment, you can pretend you’re on a tropical Island somewhere, not in the freezing cold South Island of New Zealand. I pick mine up here as it works out much cheaper.

Ren Hot Cloth Cleanser 30ml Sample size, Free with UK Instyle Magazine

Not going to lie, most of the time I use my own hard earned cash to buy a magazine, I’m not swayed by who’s on the cover or who’s kissing who, what really gets me hook line and sinker is a freebie. When I was in Heathrow Airport stocking up on magazines to get me through the 36hr journey home, I noticed Instyle Magazine had included this little gem from Ren with a face cloth along with it. I could hardly contain my excitement, that I had to give it a whirl in the aircraft toilets. Boy was I really impressed. Its so gentle, that it hasn’t irritated my skin. There’s hardly any scent, which I love as it was something that really bothered me in the past with other hot cloth cleansers. It’s also hardy enough to get the bulk of my make up off. It’s quickly become a stable, however recently I’ve been trying to use it sparingly as I don’t want it to come to an end. I think I’m definitely going to have to purchase the full size one. If you wish to give it a go, you can pick one up here from Mecca Cosmetica.

IMG_2907

Real Techniques The Buffing Brush

I’m just going to come right out and admit it, I have an awful addiction to Make up Brushes. I’m really fussy and I know in about the first five seconds if I’m going to like a brush or not. Having a great brush for your base can really make a world of difference. This brush by the famous Pixiwoo sisters Sam and Nic Chapman is not only my favourite of the month but for the past three to four years that it has been in my possession. Liquid foundation, powder foundation, mineral foundation, nothings too much for this amazing brush. I love using it with my trusty L’oreal True Match, it buffs the product beautifully into the skin, leaving it flawless and airbrushed looking. What I also love is that you don’t have to use much effort at all. The only little complication is, to get your hands on this brush you have to purchase the core collection. It’s a set of four brushes, all of which are great and I still use to this day, however it does mean you have to fork out $49.99 NZD. If you live in the UK these are available in Boots, if you’re reading this in NZ then you can pick it up here or I did see them in Life Pharmacy Sylvia Park in Auckland.

L’oreal Infallible Waterproof Eyeshadow ‘Bronzed Taupe’ RRP approx. $10NZD

It wouldn’t be a true post on this blog without mentioning Anna from Viviannadoesmakeup. I feel a little like a stalker, but I do love her style. This purchase again was because of watching one of her videos. It was also one of those, ‘really hard to track down’ items that makes you want it even more. I got this elusive shadow from Ebay here and with postage it was a pretty good deal. I believe this colour is much easier to get if you live in the US. Its the perfect cool, neutral, bronze shade, that looks great on most skin tones. What I really love about this eyeshadow is two things; Firstly its stays put all day and doesn’t crease, which is an absolute must when you have oily lids like me. Secondly it’s got a multidimensional tone to it that means its so easy to pop on without the need for any other eyeshadows to add dimension. If I’ve been sporting eyeshadow this month, this will be the little baby.

IMG_2913

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet ‘Ole Flamingo’ RRP$20 NZD Tanya Burr Lipgloss ‘Chic’ RRP£6.99

I thought I’d cover both bright and nude lip options this month. And actually it was really hard to narrow down because there have been a number of lip products I’ve been enjoying this month. But here are the two that beat the others and won the award. I’ll start with the bright and the winner this month was the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Ole Flamingo. I picked this one up again in Boots when I was back in the UK. Since I purchased this lipstick, it’s become my go to product when I want to look like I made an effort without making much of one at all. It’s a beautiful hot pink colour that will no doubt see me through both Summer and Winter. I’ve worn this out on a couple of evenings and had lots of compliments, so it must be good. This ultimate winning component for this product is it’s staying power, its so awesome that there’s still remnants of this left on my lips the next morning. It’s also not drying at all. I really wish I’d known about this at my previous job where I had to wear red lipstick all day long. You can easily pick one up from ASOS.  Secondly comes this lipgloss by Tanya Burr. I mentioned them in my recent Sunday Summary. I love me a nude lipgloss and this is one of those nudes that can transform any boring pink lipgloss you maybe wearing. It also tastes like strawberries and isn’t overly sticky and doesn’t get stuck in your hair which is always a massive plus in my books. I got mine from Superdrug in the UK here, But Feelunqiue.com also stock these.

IMG_2915

Rimmel London 60 Seconds Nail Enamel Caramel Cupcake RRP $8.23

Last but by no means least is this Nail Polish by Rimmel in Caramel Cupcake. This shade is the gorgeous natural looking taupe, that’s always on trend. I think that this looks so sophisticated and fabulous on both short and long nails. I actually wear this as my work nail polish and have also had lots of compliments on the colour. It stays pretty chip free for around four days and that’s with no top coat, which I personally think is great. It also dries like it says it will, in 60 seconds, which is awesome for someone like me who is so impatient and hates waiting for nail polish to dry. I picked mine up in store at Farmers, but you can also do a little online shopping and grab one of these from ASOS here.

So everybody if you made it to the end, a huge round of applause for you. I know this was again one of my longer post, so thanks for sticking with it. Of course there are lots of other products I’ve been loving this month, but this would’ve been the length of a dissertation if I included them all. What have you been loving beauty wise lately?

Once again thanks for reading and all your support!

The Sunday Summary

The Sunday Summary

>IMG_2884

So here we are again. Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, you creep up on me like a champion ‘what’s the time Mr wolf’ player. Yet I feel as if I haven’t really achieved much this week.

This has certainly been the week of work and blogging. I’ve been feeling so inspired, with loads of ideas buzzing around my head , that I almost feel as if there’s not enough days to fit it all in. I’ve also been hugely overwhelmed by the support I’ve been getting. I know I’ve said this previously, but it was so daunting putting myself out there. Not to get into a thing , but I’m actually quite shy, especially when it comes to expressing my thoughts and feelings. So I’d just like to quickly say a huge, massive thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to read this and put up with me waffling on and on.

In the spare few hours I’ve had where I haven’t had to work on this blog or my day job, I have turned to the tv. We started watching ‘The Returned’ and although we’re only a few episodes in, we are both already hooked. I know in my last Sunday Summary I said I loved the American version called ‘Resurrection’ I have to sadly eat my words, as the French have done it far far better. It’s much darker and way more sinister than its American counterpart and that in large part is why we both prefer it. It is subtitled and that may put some off but don’t let it, because to be honest it’s pretty darn awesome.

This week my baby brother and his girlfriend have come to stay, which is always lovely. Although it was a whirlwind of a visit its always a joy seeing them both and catching up. Laura my brothers girlfriend, bought me some new beauty goodies, that I can not wait to try.

Speaking of beauty, my big shout out for the week needs to go to Tanya Burr and her absolutely, friggin amazing lip glosses. I have 4 or maybe 5 of these beautys and they never EVER fail to impress me. I don’t want to speak about them too much as a future post is most definitely on its way but I would like to say that they are most probably what is on my lips all the time.

If I have a Saturday morning where I’m not at work, Chris and I will usually try somewhere new for brunch. This weekend was no expection to the rule and we went and checked out a little cafe called ‘Hello Sunday’. It’s located on Elgin St near the Colombo st mall. I’m so pleased that we tried it out. Again we both opted for a chai latte and it was pretty up to standard. Chris had the hash stack, which must have been amazing as he didn’t even come up for air once it arrived. I went for the fried brioche with mascarpone, stewed apples and maple syrup (as pictured below). It was divine, but so filling I couldn’t finish it all. The staff were really friendly and service was pretty prompt. What I did love about other than the great food was the decor. They’ve gone for a shabby chic kind of vibe, that I was very much feeling. Also the cabinet food looked incredible, especially the cakes. The only downside was that it’s pretty small inside, which would be fine if it wasn’t the middle of winter, as they have plenty of outdoor seating. I’d recommend either going really early to ensure you get a table or if you don’t mind sharing you can always pull up a pew with someone else.

I’ve also made a few pay day purchases this week (as pictured) all from Countdown. I’m super excited to give these a try over the week and see if they all live up to the hype and expectations. Talking of purchases I’ve also been into my local bolt of cloth again, along with spotlight and mitre 10, gathering bits and bobs for a current D.I.Y project. I’m really excited to get it completed and up here!

Sebastians weeks been pretty same old. Once again he’s mostly been snoozing, eating and attacking us, out of love we hope. Although he has been venturing outside a little more, we think he’s slowly becoming not so scared of the giant grey cat next door.

And finally our week ended last night with a trip to see my oldest and bestest friend Alyx compete in a pole competition. I’m so proud of her and all the hard work she put in. I had only been to one event like this in the past and again I was blown away with the skill and ability that the girls and 1 boy showed on the night. Chris was pretty excited too when I asked him to come along with me ( I think he thought it was going to be a different kind of show). My hightlight of the evening had to be, when one of the competitors took her jacket off and tossed it into the crowd landing in Chris’ face, I really wish I’d filmed that it certainly was priceless. I also did Alyx’s hair and make up for the event and had Chris take pictures so a post on this will be up shortly.
To sum up the weeks events it’s not been all that eventful but it’s definitely had a few highlights here and there. As I write this I’m actually away for work. So I’m really sorry if it’s a little disjointed and muddled. Also our Sunday Selfie was a little bit rushed as it was literally taken just before I rushed out the door for work (the joys of doing shift work). So thanks for sticking with me if you’ve made it this far.
The week ahead again is pretty busy, I’ve got a few D.I.Y projects on the go and a few beauty posts that I can’t wait to get up. We’ve also got friends coming for dinner and my dad is here from the UK. Once again thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy days to read these little post, it honestly means so much!
Stay cool and keep reading,

D.I.Y Fridays, Recipe

Heart Warming Chicken and Veggie Soup

It certainly is winter. I woke up to a mere 1 degree Celsius this morning and boy was that a shock to the system. As I am unable to provide you all with a D.I.Y this Friday because I’ve been pretty busy with my day job and life. I thought as a little consolation prize I’d post the recipe for the chicken soup featured in my What I Ate Tuesday post here. However, I have a few D.I.Y projects on the go as I type, so fingers crossed there will be something new on it’s way soon.

I must give credit to The Gracious Pantry here, for the recipe. I’ve used this original recipe as my base and tweaked it here and there to suit our personal tastes. I do love this website when I’m wanting to make something I know will be clean and will fill my body with goodness. I’ve also had a cold/virus on and off for the last month and quite frankly I’ve had enough. This soup has been my saviour for lunch time when I’m feeling poorly. As I mentioned in my last post I usually make a huge stock pot of this soup and then keep in the fridge. A big pot usually lasts the whole week and I’m told by Chris that it’s even better warmed up the next day.

I’m also not the greatest with measurements when I cook. I tend to do it Jamie Oliver Style and bish, bash, bosh it in. So I’m going to try my best to make it as accurate as possible, but like all recipes just adjust it to suit you.

So here we go,

What You’ll Need:

1 Tablespoon of your Cooking oil of choice, I prefer coconut oil

1 Large Onion Sliced

2 Cloves Garlic Minced

4 Large Carrots Peeled and Sliced

2 Large Leeks Sliced

Half a Cabbage Sliced

3 Stalks of Celery Chopped

3 Cups Frozen Sweetcorn

4 Large Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast- Diced

3 L of Water (12 cups)

*1-2 Pouches of the Simon Gault Stock Chicken Liquid Concentrate (to taste, I usually use two as I love the added flavour it gives)

1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder

1 Tablespoon Marjoram

Salt and Pepper to Taste

Directions:

  1. Using a wok or a non stick pan, sauté the onions, garlic, leek, cabbage and carrot for around 6-8 mins, in the coconut oil.  Just to soften the onion, cabbage and leeks. Be careful not to over do it as I have on a few occasions, burnt garlic taste is never nice.
  2. Place the wok to one side and retrieve your stock pot. I got mine (as pictured below) here from Briscoes. Amazing value when you can pick one up in the never ending sale. Measure out the water and add your stock, My favourite stock is available here at Countdown. Its quite pricey but really worth it. *I have used the cheaper alternatives, like Maggi Stock Melts and the do work well too. Or if you’re way more skilled than me, make your own. Bring this to a slow shimmer.
  3. Once the stock is shimmering away, add in your vegetables from the wok. Don’t add in the celery or sweetcorn just yet. Also add your Garlic powder and Marjoram. Cook these for 30 mins.
  4. Then add in the diced chicken breast and your celery and cook for another 30 mins.
  5. Finally add the sweetcorn, in the very last 5 mins so that they retain their crunch and juiciness. Add Salt and Pepper to Taste.

The original recipe uses parsnip, although I wanted to leave this out as I following the 17 day diet and therefore wanted to keep within the plan. It also suggests to add noodles or brown rice. I substituted the noodles with cabbage to bulk it out and have also put this with cauliflower rice as another great, clean alternative. You could also go ahead at add some courgette noodles too if you’re feeling fancy.

I hope this makes some sense, as I’m not quite used to this whole recipe writing game and you all give it a try, Stay warm and toasty!

Thanks for reading,

The Lust List

The Lust List

Now I don’t know about you but, when I was little one of my all time favourite things to do was, get the Toy World Catalogue that would arrive in the post and circle every single toy I was lusting after. Then I’d very strategically place it under my Dads (cause he was the sucker) pillow. I still love nothing more than to write a big list of all the items I’m drooling over.

So I thought that every now and then I’d whittle it down to the top ten items and share it here with you all, so here we go.

Item No 1.

nike-free-4.0-flyknit-womens-running-shoes-side

Nike Free 4.0 Flyknit RRP $199 .99 NZD available here

Not only do these look so comfy, I also think they look pretty darn cool too. I really have to blame Anna from Viviannadoesmakeup for me lusting after these. Every time she styles them in a blog or video she looks so cool, that I really want to give them a try. She also did a handy dandy post on how to style these babies, which I’ve linked above. They would be a little out of my comfort zone and general style, but I’m getting to the age were I think I need to wear something a little more sensible than ballet flats.

Item No.2

whistles

Whistles ‘Limited Marcella Large Pouch’ RRP £75 available here

Another one to blame on Anna’s blog. Whenever I watch her or read her posts she seems to have a new Whistles Bag on the go. I also have a wee browse on the website, well more like dream. This bag caught my eye a while ago, and now its even on sale, so this dream could become a reality. I love how unusual the style is and this shade of green is my favourite. It’s definitely an item I can see me rocking in the spring/summer months.

Item No.3

carolinne-04.02.14-aj9374_5

MissGuided ‘ALEENA EYELASH LACE PLUNGE NECK PUFFBALL MINI DRESS IN BABY BLUE’ RRP $59.98 NZD available here

I saw this dress on Instagram and haven’t stopped loving it since. I love the colour, the neckline with the lace detail and how floaty and princess like it is. My only reserves with splashing out the cash and buying this dress is a) I already have a million and 1 party dresses and b) The length; Sadly I wasn’t genetically blessed with skinny legs and being a curvy girl I don’t feel entirely comfortable in a short hemline.

Item No.4

ASOS Flutter Sleeve Wrap Maxi Dress in Mint RRP $100.33 NZD available here

Yes, Yes I know its another dress, but just hear me out. Well firstly just look at it. This dress is like a modern day Helen of Troy (minus the whole waring cities and stuff) mixed with a fabulous 1940’s tea dress vibe. And there goes that mint green again. I guess I really am trying to wish this winter away. Not going to lie I’m not the biggest fan of winter, give me bright sunny days, any day.

Tiffany Infinity Pendant, RRP $200 USD available here

I don’t know many girls who don’t dream about one day receiving a Tiffany Blue box. This would be what I would like to find in mine. I’m not much of a jewellery wearer, actually I hardly own any Jewels. But it doesn’t stop me from putting this on my list. I love how fine and dainty looking it is, I know big chunky statement necklaces are the big trend at the moment, but something like this is way more my style. On the website they also have a handy emailing service that will drop just the right hint to your loved ones. Chris has already had his delivered to his inbox.

Kiehls, Creme de Corps Soy Milk &Honey Whipped Body Butter RRP$62NZD available here

It wouldn’t be right to do the Lust List and not add a beauty product. This Whipped Body Butter by Kiehls would be perfect for me right now as I’ve just come to the end of my Body Shop Body Butter in Cherry Blossom. I’ve heard nothing but good things about this product. From the smell to the texture it appears that you can’t really go wrong. This is very quickly becoming a hot contender for my pay day splurge.

Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede Candle RRP £40 GBP available here

If you haven’t had the pleasure of smelling this you really need to get your toosh down to a Jo Malone stockist, quick smart. I purchased the Cologne in this fragrance when we went back to the UK. It is now my all time favourite perfume and one I will definitely repurchase, time and time again. So it makes perfect sense that I’d be lusting after the candle. In actual fact I’m kicking myself that I didn’t just buy this, along with all the other products in the line. Oh well, there’s always christmas or my birthday (hint hint loved ones haha). But on a serious note, if you like a floral scent you’ll love this.

The Fault In Our Stars Paperback or Kindle Version available here

There has been so much hype around this book, especially as it’s recently been released at the cinema. I however, am yet to see the film as I wanted to pick this up first. I’m one of those, like many out there who; have to read the book before watching the film. Whilst I write this I think I’m just going to purchase it on my kindle app on my ipad today. I guess the sooner I read it  the sooner I can get to commenting on how the book is always so much better.

And Finally… Item No.10

Black, pink, or orange crown pillowcases by Collected RRP$60 NZD for 2. available here

Last but by no means least, I first laid eyes on these gorgeous pillow cases in a magazine. I loved them so much that I noted down the website and took a look as soon as I could. At $60 they are a little on the pricey side, but they look like so much fun and good quality. I just need to get Chris on side with these and I think they’ll be mine!

Well my friends this leads me to the end of my current Lust List. I can not tell you how hard it was to narrow it down to ten, so there will most definitely be another post or two to come. Also for any of my family out there, who are probably the only ones reading this, I’ve just made you an awesome gift guide for me, so go nuts ( that’s you Mum and Dad!!)

Thanks for  Reading,

What I Ate Tuesday

As the title suggests the following post is all about what I ate, but sneaky sneaky not actually on Tuesday but Monday, O.M.G, Stop the bus. Anyway another aspect that I wanted to include on my blog is health. Now, in no shape or form am I a health expert. I’m more of a sucker who’s willing to try the latest diet or fad on the market. I have recently completed the first cycle of The 17 Day Diet and I am going to upload a post reviewing this soon. I have however at the ripe old age of 26 realised that I need to change some of my habits and incorporate some healthy ones into my life. This year is the year of the new me and a huge lifestyle overhaul.
So, I’m going to stop rabbiting on here and save all my thoughts and feelings on healthy eating for my upcoming post. Let’s get into what I ate…

No I didn’t eat Sebastian, but I had to include this!
Breakfast: I always start my morning with warm water and a squeeze of half a lemon, sometimes if I’m feeling brave I add Cider Vinegar and Honey. This morning I really fancied some avocado and tomato on toast, with lots of salt and pepper. On the recommendation of my best friend Alyx, I’m now a pink Himalayan Salt convert.
Mid-Morning Snack: I usually get peckish around 11am and I love fruit. Although I try and limit my fruit intake and eat it before 2pm (a habit I’ve picked up from the 17 day diet). So I decided to have 1 Gala Apple and 1 Pear sliced and doused with my favourite Yoghurt of the moment, The Collective, Kefir Yoghurt and a sprinkling of Cinnamon.
Lunch: If I have Monday off or a late start, I try and make a big huge pot of soup so that we have something quick and easy in the fridge. I haven’t been feeling so grande so thought that a warming Chicken and Vegetable soup would be nice. This is a recipe I’ve been making for a while now and I’ve adapted it to my own tastes, as I always do. It’s pretty yummy if I do say so myself. Packed full of leeks, carrots, cabbage, onion, sweetcorn, celery and of course Chicken
Afternoon Tea: Trusty old English Breakfast. I try to not drink too much of this and usually substitute it for green or peppermint tea. But sometimes, I love nothing more than to sit down with a good brew.
Dinner: Chris and I both LOVE Salmon. We have it at least once a week. I was really busy taking photo’s and writing the blog, so I wanted something pretty healthy and easy. I just steam/poach the Salmon. To go with this I stir fried some; Leeks, Carrots, Onion, Garlic, Broccoli, Cauliflower Aubergine, and Cabbage. I always fill up on loads of veg so that I feel nice and full. I stir fried this in a little olive oil and some Tamari Sauce which can be a great gluten free substitute for Soy Sauce.
And finally of course I try to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
We do the bulk of our supermarket shop at Countdown and sometimes treat ourselves and get it delivered. We do, however get all our fruit and veg from Raeward Fresh. I just prefer the standard of the fruit and veg there and it works out to be a little cheaper, so that’s always a bonus in my books.
Well there you have it. I managed to produce a pretty short post, Go me!
What do you guys eat on a typical day? I’d love to hear any good suggestions for other soup options.
Thanks once again for reading!

Beauty, Makeup Monday

Monday,Monday; What’s On My Face

As I start this new week, I thought what better way to start than with a post all about what I’m currently slapping on my face make up wise. This in turn means that there will be a few cringe worthy selfies to follow below (sorry, not sorry).

whatsonmyface

Today was pretty uneventful. I have however, got the day off work. I love days off work, and not because I don’t enjoy my job, I do. But because I often like to use this as my time to get ‘Glam’, even though I know, at the very most all I’ll probably do is pop to the shops. It’s fun to have a play and get out items that I’ve neglected and fall back in love all over again. And today my friends, was definitely one of those very days.

Enter the make up that graced my face…

NB: Please do excuse the fact that some of the products pictured above look well, a little well loved.

Starting from the top is L’oreal True Match Foundation in W4 Golden Natural. This has very quickly become a cult within the make up community, thanks in large part to the amazing Lauren Curtis. If you don’t know who she is go check her out, you won’t regret it (unless make ups not your thanng). I’m so happy she brought this puppy back to my attention. I remember this was my very first foundation I ever bought. I was 17 in Duane Reade, New York City, at Christmas, with my family. Am I painting a good enough picture?. Anyway, I clearly remember thinking that I was now old enough to use foundation. I chose this one, pretty much purely because Beyonce was on the picture above the stand and even then I knew, if the Queen that is Bey used this stuff well, then so should I. Long story short its been an almost 10 year on and off love affair. It’s a medium coverage however, you can build it up to a full coverage, likewise you can also sheer it out by adding a little moisturiser, if you prefer a more natural look. It stays in place all day, which I love especially for work. It also photographs well, considering it has an SPF 17, none of that horrid ghost face in any of my pictures. It’s available in NZ at Farmers, Kmart and most pharmacies that stock L’oreal. I got mine on a recent trip back to my local Boots in the town in Essex that I grew up in. Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed, I hope!

Next up is Collection Concealer in Warm Medium. A recent purchase as of last week. I was over the moon, over joyed when I saw Shaaanxo post on Facebook, that we can now get our hands on Collection in little old NZ. Lets us hope that this is a good sign and slowly we’ll catch up with the rest of the world. I have used this in the past and loved it. The only reason I stopped was because it was so hard to get here. And now its in my local Supermarket down the road, thanks Countdown! It’s a beautiful concealer. I use this under my eyes and find its enough to hide my big blue under eye bags. It perks up my face, giving me that ‘Oh, yeah I got 10 hrs beauty sleep’ look. It’s creamy enough to blend but has real staying power, that if I forget to powder it doesn’t really matter. It’s also good enough to tackle any pesky blemishes that rear their head.  The colour match is pretty much spot on too. As I mentioned I purchased mine here at Countdown, but it’s also available in the Uk at both Boots and Superdrug.

Onto matching the colour of my face to my body, and in comes Bronzer and my bronzer of choice is the ‘Chocolate’ Bronzer as its commonly known by Bourjois. I’m not going to lie but, I’ve had this in my stash for around two years… however, I only cracked into it about 6 months ago, so technically thats not bad right??. I have always been a Benefit Hoola girl. Since funnily enough that trip to New York. Anyway as I said, this have been at the bottom of my collection for a very long time and I’m so pleased I took the time to take it back out. It’s a lovely Winter bronzer for me. As I’m naturally quite tanned, I like to top this up in the winter months with fake tan, like many of us out there. This bronzer really just helps to pull everything together. There’s little, to no shimmer and the colour is a warm bronze, which is great in the winter. I got mine once again in Superdrug in the UK, however you can purchase your own one here courtesy of my favourite website ASOS, who also do free Worldwide shipping, whoop.

Blusher, Blusher, Oh how I love you dearly. Blush is one of my Essential make up items. I just adore the heck out of it. I feel like its the icing on the cake, that just completes the whole look. This Creme Blush by MAC here in the shade ‘Posey’ has been a product I’ve loved over and over. It’s a constant in my make up bag, especially in winter. I always get comments on how good my skin is when I wear this blush. To put it simply, it’s a dewy dolly pink colour. The finish gives me a ‘just popped out into the cold’ glow to my cheeks. I really think it would look great on most complexions. I use it as base for my powder blush. Which leads me straight onto Nars ‘Outlaw’ which I layer on top of Posey for a longer lasting blush. Outlaw is a Rose pink with Golden flecks running through it. I love this shade as the gold transfers onto the cheek as more of a sheen, rather than full on sparkle, which is something I’m not too keen on. This can be picked up in NZ from Mecca Cosmetica here or in Space NK or Sephora if you’re in the US.

Moving swiftly onto eyes. I always start with some form of a primer. I have oily lids, so this is a MUST. Today’s primer of choice was in the form of the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Creme Shadow in Rose Gold. I was very lucky to get this as a present from my Dad. He picked it up in duty free as a part of a travel gift set. He’s pretty awesome like that. This is as the name suggest a Rose Gold. Which looks beautiful on its own, but for me personally works at its best as a primer. Its long lasting and makes sure I have crease proof lids all day. It’s available at most department stores around NZ that have a Bobbi Brown Counter. On top of that, to give my eyes a little more oomph I turned to my trusty Naked Palette by Urban Decay. Another constant in my make up bag. I got mine here from Beauty Bay. They too do free shipping internationally. I could go on about this palette for a life time, but this post is already an essay, so I’ll refrain. I used three of my favourite shadows; Sin, a shimmery pale pink tone; all over the lid. ‘Naked’ mixed with ‘Buck’ two mid tone, matte brown colours to define my crease. This is one of my go to combos, when I’m feeling lazy.

Eyeliner is an item I have a love hate relationship with. I love the look that a winged, cat eye liner gives you, especially as I have almond shaped eyes. However, I’m partially blind in my left eye, this therefore makes applying it a little bit of a pain in the bottom. My eyeliner of choice today was the E.L.F Liquid Eyeliner in Black. I got my one from Iherb when I was ordering my vitamins. But I’ve also seen this stocked in Kmart. It has a fine enough nib that, it makes application fairly straight forward, with the ability to create both a fine, natural cat eye to a thicker more dramatic one. Its matte black, which is great and stays put all day. My only tip with this product is to defiantly wipe the nib before applying to avoid too much product and those dreaded panda eyes.

Mascara. This is my desert island item. Without it I look even more like a 10 year old, with bug eyes. With it I look a little more presentable. Once again Shaaanxo is to thank for this purchase. She mentioned this Collection ‘Does It All, 5 In 1’ Mascara available here at Countdown (once again thank you Countdown) was an awesome dupe for Benefits ‘They’re Real’. And man was Shannon right. I’m converted to this mascara, so much so that, this is my second tube. I’m normally very fickle with mascara so, buying another one was a huge deal for me. If you’ve used ‘They’re Real’ then this is pretty much the exact same result but a whole lot cheaper. It’s also way easier to remove. This curls, lengthens and thickens my eyelashes, what more could I ask for really?.Oh no wait… It also makes my pretty non existent bottom lashes look full too. Its very quickly knocked Maybelline the ‘Falsies’ off of the top spot in my favourite Mascara of all time, mental list.

Then comes Lips. Lipstick of Choice for today was dug out from the bottom of my make up dresser. Nars ‘Barbarella’ a gorgeous light coral, pink shade. You can get this one again from Mecca Costmetica It’s pretty non offensive colour and teamed with Tanya Burrs Lipgloss in ‘Afternoon Tea’ available from Superdrug, you’re left with a lovely peachy, pinky, coral lip, which I love for days that I’ve got a bit going on with my eyes.

So, If you’ve managed to make it all the way to here, I’d firstly like to congratulate you for sticking with me. Secondly, below are some more photo’s. I hope that this has been of some use to you all out there! What are you all putting on your faces this Monday/Week? Any products you can recommend for my next Make up Monday would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, so much for your support and comments. Anyway queue the Selfies…
